Why Dubai's Water Is So Hard on Your Hair and Skin (and What Actually Helps)

Ask almost anyone who has moved to Dubai and they'll tell you a version of the same story: within a few months, the hairbrush looks fuller, the scalp feels itchier, and skin that behaved perfectly well back home suddenly feels tight and dry the moment you step out of the shower.

It isn't your imagination, and it isn't only the air conditioning. The water coming out of your shower head has been on a remarkable journey — from the Arabian Gulf, through a desalination plant, along kilometres of hot pipes and often a rooftop tank — and each stage shapes how it treats your hair and skin. Here's the science, and what genuinely helps.

From the Gulf to your shower head

Dubai has almost no fresh water of its own, so nearly 99% of its tap water starts as seawater, processed through DEWA's desalination plants; only a small remainder comes from wells. The water is treated, disinfected and remineralised, and it meets WHO-aligned drinking-water standards — Dubai's tap water is genuinely safe to drink.

But "safe to drink" and "gentle on hair and skin" are two different questions. Municipal water is engineered for public health — free of harmful microbes, non-corrosive, stable across a huge network — not for your hair cuticle. Three features of that engineering are what your hair and skin notice.

The three things that make Dubai water tough on hair and skin

1. Hardness: the minerals that don't rinse away

Hard water is water carrying high levels of dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. Every time you wash, some of those minerals deposit onto your hair and skin — the same build-up you see as white scale on the shower glass.

On hair, that mineral film matters. A 2018 study in the International Journal of Trichology found that hair washed repeatedly in hard water lost measurable tensile strength compared with hair washed in deionised water — the force needed to break a strand dropped significantly — and mineral deposits roughened the hair surface, which is what you experience as tangling, frizz and dullness. (For honesty's sake: an earlier 2013 study using milder hard water found no significant strength change, so the degree of hardness and months of daily exposure are what tip the balance.)

On skin, the mechanism is even clearer. Researchers at the University of Sheffield and King's College London showed that the calcium and magnesium in hard water bind to the surfactants in soap and shower gel and leave them sitting on the skin, where they irritate it. Hard water also raises the skin's surface pH — skin is naturally slightly acidic — and that shift weakens the skin barrier, leaving it more prone to dryness and irritation. The researchers concluded that washing with hard water may contribute to the development of eczema, and a 2021 systematic review found a consistent association between domestic water hardness and atopic eczema.

2. Chlorine: essential for safety, unkind to keratin

Dubai's water is chlorinated on purpose. A residual level of roughly 0.2–1.0 mg/L is maintained in the network — within WHO-aligned limits — so the water stays protected from microbes all the way from the plant to your tap. For public health, that's exactly right.

For hair and skin, chlorine is less friendly. It's an oxidising agent: it can strip the natural oils (sebum) that keep your scalp comfortable and your skin's moisture sealed in, and it can roughen the hair cuticle. A warm shower amplifies the effect — heat opens up the hair shaft and increases skin contact — and unlike a swimming pool, this exposure happens every single day.

3. The journey: hot pipes and rooftop tanks

Even water that leaves the plant in perfect condition has to travel — through long distribution lines, a building's own pipework and, very often, a rooftop storage tank sitting in extreme heat. Along the way it can pick up rust, sediment and traces of metals from ageing pipes and tanks. What reaches an apartment shower is not quite what left the plant, which is why two buildings on the same street can have noticeably different water.

What actually helps (and what doesn't)

More product isn't the answer

Piling on conditioner and body lotion treats the symptom, not the cause. Conditioner struggles to do its job over mineral-coated hair, and rich creams on a compromised skin barrier are working uphill. If the water is doing damage every day, the daily cause is the thing to address.

A whole-house softener works — at a price

A plumbed-in water softener genuinely removes calcium and magnesium, but it costs thousands of dirhams, requires plumbing work, and simply isn't an option for most renters in Dubai.
