The Science · Patented NMC filtration

What shower water
actually does
to your skin.

Most "shower filters" are charcoal in a tube. blu uses a patented Nano Molecular Cluster (NMC) medium — NSF-certified, used by no other shower filter on the market, up to 10× more effective than KDF55 — engineered to capture chlorine, heavy metals and bacteria in a single pass.

01
The premise

The water is the skincare.

You shower in water that's been pressurised through kilometres of municipal pipework, sat in rooftop tanks, dosed with chlorine to keep it potable, and finally heated. By the time it reaches your skin, it's not the same water that left the treatment plant.

Why showering matters more than drinking

Hot water opens pores. The skin barrier becomes more permeable. The spray from a shower head carries everything dissolved or suspended in the water directly onto your largest organ. About 50% of your daily chlorine exposure comes from showering, not drinking water.

What "treated" actually means

Municipal treatment is engineered to make water safe to drink — not optimal to bathe in. Residual chlorine and chloramine are deliberately left in the supply to suppress regrowth in the pipes. The pipes themselves contribute heavy metal traces. Stagnant tanks and dead-leg plumbing seed bacterial biofilm that thrives on showerhead aerators.

The contaminants

What's actually in your water.

03
The mechanism

One pass.
Five stages.

Water passes through the housing in roughly half a second. In that fraction of a second, four engineering systems do their work in sequence — none of them a substitute for the others.

01
Inlet & flow regulation
Water enters via the German-engineered Neoperl® flow regulator — optimising pressure across all flow rates while reducing water and heating consumption by up to 50%.
02
Stainless steel mesh layer (NMC cartridge)
The first point of sediment filtration: a fine stainless steel mesh built into the NMC cartridge itself, catching rust flakes, scale fragments and sand before they reach the active medium.
03
Nano Molecular Cluster (NMC) filtration
Our patented NMC medium — metal clusters formed on porous ceramic balls with up to 100× more specific surface area and porosity than KDF media. Strong redox electrochemistry from micron-level primary cells captures chlorine, heavy metals and bacteria in a single pass.
04
Upper mesh filter chamber
A second stainless steel mesh layer sits above the cartridge in the upper chamber, capturing any fine sediment that escapes the cartridge mesh — a final guard before the spray plate.
05
Ionic stainless steel exit plate
Filtered water passes through 244 perforations precision-etched at 0.3 mm in highest-grade Ionic Stainless Steel — versus 0.9 mm on every other shower head on the market. As water charges through the plate it generates health-promoting negative ions, like a waterfall striking rock.
What NMC actually is

A patented Nano Molecular Cluster medium, not activated carbon.

Most consumer shower filters are activated carbon — adequate at adsorbing chlorine but fundamentally limited against heavy metals and biological contaminants. NMC is our patented medium: metal clusters formed on porous ceramic balls with specific surface area and porosity up to 100× greater than KDF media. Chlorine is reduced to harmless chloride; soluble heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium) are exchanged onto the cluster surface and immobilised.

The medium has strong redox ability from its micron-level primary cells, and the shift in oxidation/reduction potential it produces inhibits the growth and breeding of bacteria and viruses on the cartridge itself. The cartridge visibly browns from slate-blue as the redox reactions consume the active surface; that's how you know when to replace it.

Stage 04 · The 244-hole plate

0.3 mm perforations. Nobody else has them.

Every other shower on the market drills its plate at 0.9 mm. Ours are 0.3 mm — a third of the diameter — achieved through our patented etching technique. No other manufacturer has reached this precision. Three things happen as water leaves:

  • The 0.3 mm pattern delivers finer, fuller coverage at lower flow rates.

  • As water charges through the stainless steel plate it generates health-promoting negative ions — the same process by which waterfalls crashing onto rock ionise the surrounding air.

  • The Ionic Stainless surface resists biofilm regrowth on the showerhead itself.

The competition

Why most shower filters aren't enough.

Skepticism, answered

The four questions we get most often.

01 Doesn't my building already filter the water?

Building filtration handles potability — not the residual chlorine, heavy metal traces from internal pipework, or showerhead biofilm. blu sits at the very last point in the system: the showerhead itself.

02 Won't a shower filter reduce pressure?

No. The German-engineered Neoperl® flow regulator at the inlet optimises pressure at every flow rate while reducing water and heating consumption by up to 50%. Many customers report stronger spray, not weaker.

03 How is NMC different from a "vitamin C" filter?

Vitamin C only partially neutralises chlorine — and chlorine is all it touches. It depletes within weeks, leaves heavy metals untouched, and does nothing for biofilm. NMC works on chlorine, soluble heavy metals, and bacterial capture across a full ~2-month service life.

04 Where's the proof?

NSF 42 certification (the drinking-water standard — no other shower filter holds it), SGS, Eurofins and TÜV testing, ISO 9001/9002 manufacturing, a 5-star ECAS rating, and WELS water-efficiency labelling. Full reduction percentages are published in the lab tab on the product page; the full test report is available on request.
