Are Shower Filters Worth It? The Evidence, Graded

An evidence-graded look at shower filters: what they measurably change for skin and hair, what the research does not support, and what a year actually costs.

Search this question and you get two useless answers: marketing that credits shower filters with everything short of eternal youth, and dismissals calling them a gimmick. The truth is narrower and more interesting. A shower filter does one thing with strong evidence behind it, two things with reasonable evidence, and several things it is regularly sold for and cannot do at all.

We make one, so treat this as an interested party's guide — then read the evidence table, graded honestly, including the rows where the research does not support us.

  • Strongly supported: reducing chlorine changes how the water smells and feels. That part is not in doubt.
  • Reasonably supported: less chlorine means less drying of skin and less cuticle damage to hair, especially if your skin is already reactive.
  • Not supported: treating eczema. The best trial of softened water for childhood eczema found no objective benefit, and the leading skin study found no clear effect from chlorine.
  • Impossible: softening water, stopping hair loss, detoxing anything. No shower filter does any of these.

Are shower filters worth it?

For most UAE residents who can smell chlorine in the bathroom, yes — on the same basis a good moisturiser is worth it, not on the basis of a cure. You are spending a few hundred dirhams a year to reduce one recurring irritant from a daily exposure. That is a modest, real benefit, not a transformation.

If you cannot smell chlorine, your skin and hair are behaving, and your building already filters its supply, you are the buyer with the least to gain. And if your actual complaint is limescale on the glass or shampoo that will not lather, a shower filter is the wrong product entirely — those are hardness problems, and no filter reduces hardness.

The evidence, graded

What the research says about skin

The best direct evidence for filtering chlorine comes from a 2003 study of bathing water, which measured how well the outer skin layer held water after exposure. Free residual chlorine reduced that capacity, and it did so at a much lower threshold in people with atopic dermatitis — 0.5 mg/L, against 2.0 mg/L in healthy skin. Given that blu's characterisation of a Dubai Marina municipal sample measured 2.8 mg/L free chlorine, that is a relevant range rather than a theoretical one.

Now the part most shower-filter pages leave out. When researchers looked specifically at what irritates atopic skin during washing, the culprit they identified was hardness, not chlorine: hard water increased surfactant deposition from cleansers, which increased water loss and irritation, and softening the water by ion exchange mitigated it. In the same work, a clear effect of chlorine was not observed. And when a randomised trial fitted water softeners in the homes of 336 children with moderate-to-severe eczema, it found no objective difference in eczema severity against usual care.

Read those together and the honest conclusion is this: for skin comfort, reducing chlorine has a plausible, measured mechanism and is worth doing. For treating a diagnosed skin condition, the evidence does not support a shower filter, and it does not really support a softener either. If you have eczema or dermatitis, the filter is a comfort measure alongside your clinician's plan, never a substitute for it.

What the research says about hair

Chlorine forms hypochlorous acid in water, which oxidises the lipid layer bonded to the hair cuticle. Strip it and the strand becomes rougher and more porous: it tangles, catches and snaps. Competitive swimmers show this plainly — in one comparison, 61% of 67 professional swimmers had hair discolouration against none of 54 non-swimmers, with visible nail-plate damage too.

Two honest caveats. Pool water is far more concentrated than tap water, so the swimmer evidence establishes the mechanism rather than the tap-level dose. And those same swimmers, with visibly damaged hair, did not lose more of it — which is the clearest available demonstration that chlorine causes breakage, not hair loss.

The hard-water side is unsettled. A 2013 study found no significant effect on hair tensile strength; 2016 and 2018 studies found the opposite. What is consistent is that hard water leaves residue and makes hair harder to rinse — and rougher handling causes breakage. A filter does not help with that part.

What it costs, honestly

The head is a one-off; cartridges are the recurring cost, and that is where the real spend sits. One side benefit that survives scrutiny: a standard shower head runs at about 2.5 gallons a minute, roughly 9.5 litres, and every litre is heated. The EPA's WaterSense benchmark is 2.0 gpm, about 7.6 litres. A flow-regulated head reduces both water and the energy used to heat it — which counts for more in a country that manufactures nearly all its fresh water by desalination.

Who should buy one — and who should not

Worth it if: you can smell chlorine in your shower; your skin feels tight or your hair feels rougher since moving to the UAE; you rent and cannot install anything plumbed-in; or you have colour-treated hair you would rather not keep re-doing.

Not your priority if: your building already filters its supply and you notice nothing; your complaint is limescale or lather, which needs a softener; or you are hoping to treat a diagnosed skin or hair condition, in which case the money is better spent on the appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Will a shower filter help my eczema?

Honestly, the evidence does not support that claim. The randomised trial of softened water in children with eczema found no objective benefit, and the leading study of what irritates atopic skin during washing found no clear effect from chlorine. Reducing chlorine may make showering more comfortable, but treat it as comfort, not treatment, and follow your dermatologist.

Do shower filters soften hard water?

No. None of them do. Softening takes calcium and magnesium out using ion-exchange resin — a plumbed-in softener, or a resin-based product such as blu's separate NXT LVL Shower Softener & Filter, which uses Seplite resin.

Is UAE tap water unsafe without a filter?

No, and no honest seller should imply it. UAE supply is treated to drinking-water standards. A shower filter is about comfort and cosmetic effect on skin and hair, which is a completely different question from safety.

How long before I notice anything?

The water feels different on the first shower, because most of the chlorine has been reduced. Skin usually reads as less tight within a week or two. Hair follows the growth cycle, so give it six to eight weeks and judge it on tangling and snapping.

Do I have to keep buying cartridges?

Yes, and a filter that never needs a new cartridge is one that stopped working. Budget roughly AED 200–400 a year. Any filter with a spent cartridge in it is a shower head.

Is the difference real or is it placebo?
