How Do Shower Water Filters Work? A Stage-by-Stage Guide
A stage-by-stage look inside a shower filter cartridge: what each filtration medium physically does, how to read an NSF certification, and what no shower filter can do.

A shower filter looks like a shower head, and that is the whole problem with explaining one. From the outside there is nothing to see, so the category has filled up with vague promises about "purified" water and almost no detail about what happens inside.
This is the mechanical version: what is in shower water, what each filter medium physically does to it, what happens stage by stage inside a blu cartridge, how to tell a real performance claim from a marketing one, and what no shower filter can do.
- A shower filter is a small pressure vessel holding a filtration medium. Water passes through in roughly half a second, so medium and contact time decide everything.
- Three mechanisms do the work: adsorption (carbon), redox chemistry (KDF and blu's NMC), and mechanical straining (mesh, for rust and grit).
- Certification is the only claim worth reading. NSF/ANSI 177 is the shower-specific standard and it covers free available chlorine only; blu's cartridge is built on an NSF/ANSI 42 certified filtration medium.
- No shower filter softens water. Nothing in a cartridge takes calcium and magnesium out, so limescale on the glass will still appear.
- Every medium has a finite capacity. A filter you never replace stops filtering, quietly.
The short answer
A shower filter works by forcing your water through a bed of reactive material on its way to the spray plate, so the water landing on you is chemically different from the water in the pipe. Most of that change is chlorine — adsorbed onto a porous surface or converted to chloride — plus whatever rust, grit and dissolved metal the housing catches on the way past.
What makes it hard is the conditions. Filtration data is usually generated in cool water at a gentle flow. A shower is warm water at high flow, with contact time measured in fractions of a second. A medium that performs beautifully in a kitchen jug can do very little in a shower head, which is exactly why certification exists.
What a shower filter is up against
Chlorine is there on purpose. Utilities keep a residual disinfectant right through the distribution network so microbes cannot regrow between the plant and your tap. The World Health Organization notes chlorine is present in most disinfected drinking water at 0.2 to 1 mg/L, and that a small residual acting as a preservative during distribution is normal practice. It is a public-health feature, not a defect — and it means chlorine is still there at your shower.
Showering is a real exposure route. Jo, Weisel and Lioy measured chloroform in exhaled breath after showering and found the internal dose from a shower, inhalation and skin absorption combined, was comparable to the dose from drinking tap water all day.
The water changes on the way to you. Whatever leaves the plant still travels through mains, a building's risers and, across much of the UAE, a rooftop tank in serious heat, picking up sediment, rust and traces of metal from ageing pipework. Dubai's Regulatory and Supervisory Bureau sets quality requirements for the network, but no regulation governs the last hundred metres of pipe inside your building.
The media: what actually does the work
Every shower filter is a housing wrapped around a medium, and only a handful are in commercial use. They work by genuinely different chemistry, which is why they behave differently in a hot, fast shower.

Notice what is missing from every row: nothing there reduces hardness. Activated carbon in particular gets sold as a general-purpose fix, but the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's extension guidance is blunt — carbon filters will not take out the calcium and magnesium that make water hard.
Inside a blu cartridge: one pass, five stages

- Flow regulation. A German-made Neoperl regulator at the inlet holds a consistent flow across varying supply pressures.
- Stainless mesh, lower. A fine mesh in the cartridge catches rust, sand and scale before they reach the active medium and blind it.
- NMC medium. Nano Molecular Cluster: metal clusters formed on porous ceramic balls with up to 100 times the specific surface area of KDF media. Redox chemistry converts free chlorine to chloride; dissolved metal ions are exchanged onto the cluster surface and held there.
- Stainless mesh, upper. A second mesh above the cartridge catches anything fine that escaped the first.
- Ionic exit plate. 244 perforations etched at 0.3 mm in stainless steel, against roughly 0.9 mm on a conventional plate. Finer holes make a finer, fuller spray at the same flow.
In blu's own laboratory characterisation of a Dubai Marina municipal sample on a new cartridge under controlled conditions, free chlorine, chloramine and lead were each reduced. Those are blu's own measurements on one sample, not an independent field study, and they describe a new cartridge rather than one near the end of its life. Method and figures are on the results page.
One caveat on that last stage: a finer spray changes how water feels, and blu's plate genuinely does. Feel is not filtration, and this category blurs the two constantly.
How you tell whether any of it works
Read the standard number, then check who certified it. There are two you will meet.
NSF/ANSI 177 is the shower-specific standard, and it is narrow. It covers material safety, structural integrity and the reduction of aesthetic free available chlorine, requiring at least a 50% reduction from a 2.0 mg/L challenge across the filter's rated service life. That is genuinely useful, because it is tested under simulated shower conditions rather than in a beaker. It is also a floor: a filter can be fully certified to 177 and make no verified claim whatsoever about metals.
NSF/ANSI 42 is the broader drinking-water standard for aesthetic effects — chlorine, taste, odour and particulate. blu's cartridge is built on an NSF/ANSI 42 certified filtration medium. That is a certification of the medium itself, not of the finished shower head or the company; the distinction matters, most brands blur it, and it is worth being precise about ours.
Be suspicious of "tested to". Tested to a standard can mean a manufacturer ran its own tests to the protocol, with no third-party audit and no ongoing surveillance. If a listing names a standard without naming a certifying body, treat it as a sentence, not a specification.
What no shower filter can do
It does not soften water. Softening is ion exchange: a plumbed-in vessel of resin beads that swap sodium for calcium and magnesium, regenerated periodically with brine. No cartridge in a shower head does that, ours included, so scale will still form on the glass and soap will still behave the way hard-water soap behaves.
It does not treat a medical condition. A filter changes your water. It does not treat, cure or prevent eczema, dermatitis, dandruff or pattern hair loss. If something on your skin or scalp is painful, spreading or getting worse, see a dermatologist — a filter is a reasonable thing to try alongside proper care, not a substitute for it.
It does not last forever. Every medium has a finite capacity, and a saturated one is just a restriction in the pipe. blu's cartridge is rated at about two months, roughly 4,000 litres, and browns from slate-blue as it is consumed.
Frequently asked questions
Does a shower filter take chlorine out completely?
No. Reduction is the honest word, and the figure depends on the medium, the water temperature, the flow rate and how much life is left in the cartridge. Even NSF/ANSI 177, the dedicated shower standard, sets its bar at a 50% reduction rather than at zero.
Will a shower filter soften my hard water?
No, and no shower filter does. Reducing hardness requires ion exchange in a plumbed-in softener. Filtration changes chlorine and dissolved metals, a different problem. Water can feel softer without being chemically softened, and those two things are easy to confuse.
Does a filter reduce my water pressure?
A cartridge adds resistance, but a fine spray plate concentrates the flow it is given, which usually offsets it. Nothing on the end of a hose can raise your building's supply pressure. If yours is already poor, expect a gentler shower, not a stronger one.
How do I know when to change the cartridge?
Go by throughput, not by feel — performance falls gradually, so you will not notice the day it stops working. blu's cartridge is rated at roughly two months and browns visibly as it depletes. If yours has no indicator, set a reminder from its rated volume.
Is a shower filter worth it if my water is already treated?
It depends what is bothering you. Municipal treatment makes water safe to drink, which is not the same as optimal to stand under daily, and the residual disinfectant is deliberately still there. If chlorine and pipework metals are the concern, a filter addresses them at the last point before contact. If limescale is the concern, it will not help.
